This Sunday’s passage from Matthew’s Gospel, 16: 13-20, have Jesus asking his disciples a profound spiritual question, “But who do you say that I am?” I suspect that most of us would respond the way that Peter does in the Gospel, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Although Peter gives the correct answer, it would take him time to fully grasp what his profession of faith would mean for his life. To be Christ’s follower means to serve, not counting the cost and consequences. After denying Jesus in a very dark moment and then encountering the risen Christ after the crucifixion, Peter would slowly recognize that his earlier declaration would mean living his life in a radically new way. This new way meant giving witness and inviting others into this faith in Christ, the Son of the living God.
Last weekend and this weekend we have welcomed a total of six new members to our Church through the sacrament of Baptism. Each Baptism was private, welcoming only the parents, godparents, babies to be baptized and several other family members. Despite the Pandemic Moment approach, I was inspired by the families of these six newest members of St. Aedan’s. They are courageous witnesses to a faith in Christ that calls us to bring others to that same faith, no matter what. In our Zoom preparation classes the parents and godparents shared that having their babies baptized was so very important and they were grateful that the Parish has begun to Baptize again. They deeply desire for their babies what was given to them by their parents and godparents and are committed to helping these children to grow in the faith through religious education, attendance at Mass and a family life centered on Christ. Amazing; awesome; wow! Indeed, St. Aedan’s is blessed by six new members to our Parish and six families, like our many other St. Aedan’s families, so committed to Christ, the Son of the living God.
El evangelio de san Mateo de este domingo, 16: 13-20, muestra a Jesús preguntándoles a sus discípulos una profunda pregunta espiritual, “Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?” Sospecho que muchos de nosotros responderíamos como lo hace Pedro en el evangelio, “Tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios vivo.” Aunque Pedro responde correctamente, tardaría algún tiempo más en entender completamente el significado para su vida de esta profesión de fe. Seguir a Cristo significa servir a los demás sin contar el costo o las consecuencias. Después de negar a Jesús en un momento muy malo y de encontrar al Cristo resucitado tras la crucifixión, Pedro reconoce lentamente que su profesión anterior implica vivir su vida de una manera radicalmente nueva. Esta nueva manera conlleva dar testimonio e invitar a los demás a participar de la fe en Cristo, el Hijo de Dios vivo.
Este fin de semana y el anterior dimos la bienvenida a un total de seis nuevos miembros a nuestra iglesia a través del sacramento del bautizo. Cada bautizo se hizo en privado, dándole la bienvenida a los padres, padrinos, a los bebés que fueron bautizados, y a varios otros miembros de cada familia. A pesar del modo de proceder durante la pandemia, me sentí inspirado por las familias de estos seis nuevos miembros de St. Aedan’s. Son testigos valientes de una fe en Cristo que nos llama a invitar a otros a unirse a nuestra comunidad creyente sin importar los desafíos. Durante nuestras clases pre bautismales a través de Zoom, los padres y padrinos destacaron lo mucho que querían bautizar a sus pequeños y lo agradecidos que estaban ahora que ya es posible celebrar bautizos de nuevo en nuestra parroquia. Desean profundamente darles a sus bebés el mismo don que ellos recibieron de sus padres y padrinos, y están comprometidos a ayudar a que crezca la fe de estos niños a través de la educación religiosa, la asistencia a la Misa, y una vida familiar centrada en Cristo. ¡Increíble: extraordinario; fantástico! En efecto, es una bendición para St. Aedan’s darle la bienvenida a estos seis nuevos miembros y a sus familias que, como muchas otras en nuestra parroquia, están comprometidas con Cristo, el Hijo de Dios vivo.
