After a careful reading of the Archdiocesan directives for Holy Week 2021 and a conversation with the Jesuits assisting at St. Aedan’s, I would like to share with our community how we will journey from Palm Sunday, March 28 to Easter Sunday, April 4. Please note that all Services from Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday will be livestreamed from our St. Aedan’s Facebook page.
Palm Sunday [CLICK HERE TO REGISTER]: Masses will begin with folks being checked in as usual. After checking in, a Parish volunteer wearing gloves and exercising social distancing will hand parishioners palm. Mass will begin the usual way with the faithful standing for the entrance hymn in the pews and not by gathering with our palms at the main doors of the church for the reading of the first gospel. The priest celebrant will begin Mass with a blessing of the palm from the sanctuary. No holy water will be used. The Passion will be read with the priest and two lectors socially distanced in the sanctuary.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation: Confessions will be available on Monday, March 29 from 12:45 p.m.-2 p.m. and on Tuesday, March 30 from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. There will be no service. Two priests will be available on both days.
Holy Thursday [CLICK HERE TO REGISTER]: Mass on April 1 will begin at 7:30 p.m. This will be a multicultural celebration capturing in word and song the rich diversity of our St. Aedan’s Community. There will be no washing of feet and no procession of the Blessed Sacrament at the end of the Mass. The Blessed Sacrament will remain in the tabernacle. After Mass those already registered and in the church may remain for thirty minutes of silent prayer in the Church.
Good Friday [CLICK HERE TO REGISTER]: Services on April 2 will be at 3 p.m. in Spanish and 6:30 p.m. in English. There will be a different veneration of the cross. Rather than kissing or touching a crucifix, there will be presented from the sanctuary one large wooden cross for the people to gently and reverently pass before and bow in front of. Our Parish Volunteers will invite the different sections of the Church, one at a time, to move toward the center isle and reverence the cross in single file.
Easter Vigil [CLICK HERE TO REGISTER]: Saturday, April 3 will begin at 8:15 p.m. This will also be a multicultural celebration and different from past Vigils at St. Aedan’s. There will be no gathering to light the Easter fire, no candle tapers and the Pascal Candle will remain in the sanctuary. We have no RCIA at the Vigil this year and the “Renewal of Baptismal Promises” will take place without the sprinkling rite. There is no Litany of the Saints or Blessing of Water.
Easter Sunday [CLICK HERE TO REGISTER]: April 4 will be at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. (Spanish) and 1 p.m. As with the Vigil, there is no sprinkling rite. I do ask everyone to be mindful of our seating limitations. Although we are striving to seat 200 people in our Church, we are not even near full capacity. As long as the State of New Jersey and the Newark Archdiocese mandate six feet of social distancing, we cannot seat more than 200. I strongly encourage people who normally attend the 9 a.m. to consider the Easter Vigil or the 1 p.m. If we are able to spread out across the Masses and be flexible, I think we will be able to welcome all those who desire to attend Easter Masses.
I thank all of you for your incredible cooperation and generosity. These continue to be challenging times but together we will sing our Easter Alleluia from our beautiful Church space once again. COVID prevented us from doing so a year ago but our God and the inspiring faith of our St. Aedan’s Community has brought us to this new and promising moment.
Después de una lectura cuidadosa de las directivas arquidiocesanas acerca de la Semana Santa de 2021 y después de una conversación con los jesuitas de St. Aedan's, yo quisiera informarles sobre los servicios de la Semana Santa, desde el Domingo de Ramos, (el 28 de marzo) hasta el Domingo de Pascua, (el 4 de abril). Tengan en cuenta que todos los Servicios serán transmitidos en vivo desde la página de Facebook de St. Aedan.
DOMINGO DE RAMOS [HAGA CLIC AQUÍ PARA REGISTRAR]. Las misas comenzarán a la puerta del templo con el registro de los asistentes. En seguida los ramos de palma serán repartidos por un voluntario que usa guantes y que mantiene el distanciamiento social. Sin hacer procesión, sin rociar los ramos con agua bendita, y sin proclamar el evangelio de la entrada de Jesús en Jerusalén, el sacerdote celebrante bendecirá las palmas desde el santuario. Luego la misa continuirá como de siempre. La Pasión de Jesús será proclamada por el sacerdote y dos lectores que mantienen el distanciamiento social en el santurario.
La celebración de la Penitencia y el perdón de los pecados tendrá lugar en dos momentos distintos: (1) El lunes, 29 de marzo, de las 12:45 pm hasta las 2:00 pm. (2) El martes, 30 de marzo, de las 6:30 pm hasta las 8:00 pm. Dos sacerdotes estarán libres ambos días.
JUEVES SANTO [HAGA CLIC AQUÍ PARA REGISTRAR]. La misa de la Cena del Señor (el 1ero de abril) tendrá lugar a las 7:30 pm. Será una celebración multicultural que dejará ver por palabras y canciones la rica diversidad de nuestra comunidad de St. Aedan. Por la pandemia, quedan cancelados el lavatorio de los pies y la procesión con el Santísimo Sacramento. La veneración del Santísimo será permitida por treinta minutos al final de la misa, solo a los registrados que ya están en el templo, que oran en silencio, y que mantienen el distanciamiento social.
VIERNES SANTO [HAGA CLIC AQUÍ PARA REGISTRAR]. Los servicios del Viernes Santo (el 2 de abril) serán celebrados a las 3:00 pm en español, y a las 6:30 pm en inglés. Por la pandemia, va a haber una nueva manera de venerar la cruz. Para evitar el contagio, será prohibido el besar o el tocar el crucifijo. Sin embargo se les invitará a los fieles a pasar ante el crucifijo con reverencia y hacer una inclinación profunda de amor. Por favor, sigan las instrucciones de los voluntarios, y quédense en su banco hasta que cada uno sea llamado.
VIGILIA PASCUAL [HAGA CLIC AQUÍ PARA REGISTRAR]. El comienzo de la Vigilia será a las 8:15 pm (el 3 de abril). Aunque será celebrada de forma multicultural, tal como en los años pasados, la pandemia nos obliga a cambiar la misa de muchas maneras: No se va a prender la fogata pascual, la llama que significa a Jesús resucitado; el cirio pascual no será llevado por el templo en procesión, y los fieles no tendrán velitas en la mano; no habrán ni Letanía de los Santos, ni bendición del agua, ni bautismos de RICA este año; y la renovación de las Promesas Bautismales se llevará a cabo sin usar el agua bendita.
DOMINGO DE PASCUA [HAGA CLIC AQUÍ PARA REGISTRAR]. El 4 de abril, Domingo de Pascua, el júbilo de la Resurrección será celebrado tres veces --- a las 9:00 am (inglés), a las 11:00 am (español), y a la 1:00 pm (inglés). Al igual que la Vigilia, no habrá rito de aspersión con agua bendita. Se pide a todos tener en cuenta el número limitado de cupos en el templo. Si no fuera por la pandemia, el templo podría acomodar a mucho más de 200 personas, pero por las órdenes de la Arquidiócesis y del Estado, se permite la entrada a no más de 200 personas que mantienen el distanciamiento social. Por lo tanto, para que quepan más personas en la misa aglomerada de las 9:00, les ruego a los que normalmente asisten a las 9:00 a que hagan un cambio y participen en la Vigilia Pascual (sábado, 8:15 pm), o bien en el Domingo de Pascua a la 1:00 pm. De este modo se espera que hayan cupos sufficientes para que todos puedan participar en el gozo de la Resurrección. Les agradezco a todos su increíble cooperación y generosidad. Estos tiempos no dejan de desafiarnos, pero juntos cantaremos de nuevo nuestro Aleluya de Pascua en nuestro hermoso templo, unidos en fe, esperanza y amor. El año pasado, COVID nos prohibió celebrar la Semana Santa, pero nuestro Dios va inspirando a nuestra Comunidad de St. Aedan. Andemos con Jesús, confiados en su poder en este nuevo momento prometedor.
