As we continue our May journey and celebrate Mother’s Day this Sunday, I would like to offer a reflection about the other image that stands at the break of the Church, St. Rose of Lima. Much like Catherine of Siena, her life was brief, 1586-1617, and she remained a lay woman in service to the Church, not a Religious Sister. Born in Lima, Peru Rose would devote her life to prayer, penance and service to the poor. As a young girl she came to know and imitate in her asceticism Catherine of Siena. It is also impressive for our culturally rich and diverse parish of St. Aedan’s to note that Saint Rose of Lima is the patroness of the Americas, the indigenous people of the Americas, Peru, India and the Philippines.
Our Gospel this Sunday is perfect as we celebrate our mothers, living and deceased, and consider the life of St. Rose of Lima. Christ’s call in today’s Gospel, John 15: 9-17 is to love one another as he has loved us. Rose did this in her brief and inspiring life as did our mothers and so many other women of faith we have come to know. From these many women of faith we have encountered again and again the love that Jesus’ describes in our Gospel today. The fruit of their love remains with us even at the hour of their death. Indeed, they have left an undeniable mark on our hearts. That mark is also an invitation from Christ himself to go forth and do as our moms and the other women of faith in our lives, love.
As we ponder Christ’s call to love on this Mother’s Day, I also would like to highlight that our moms, like Rose of Lima, were lay women of faith. They stayed in the world and engaged in family life and service to the Church. This call to serve as both lay women and men is one that is so very rich and important to the life of the Church, perhaps now more than ever. When I consider the wonderful ministries taking place at St. Aedan’s from Religious Education, care for the sick and shut-ins, migrants, the undocumented, the hungry, liturgical ministry and community prayer I am inspired and humbled. All of this is happening and our parish is so alive thanks to the love and dedicated service of lay women and men. Through their many ministries the community of St. Aedan’s and our local community of Jersey City encounter the Christ who calls himself in the Gospel, friend.
Let us continue our May journey with our Mother Mary, Rose of Lima, Catherine of Siena and our moms, living and deceased asking Christ to fill us with their courage, hope, love and spirit of generosity. May they inspire us this month and beyond to even greater love and holiness in Jesus’ name.

Mujeres de fe en este mes de mayo, segunda parte: Santa Rosa de Lima
En el mes de mayo, al celebrar en este país el Día de la Madre, me da gusto ofrecerles una reflexión sobre la otra imagen que se encuentra cerca de la puerta lateral, la de Santa Rosa de Lima. Al igual que Catalina de Siena, su vida fue breve, (1586-1617), y la pasó sirviendo a la Iglesia como una laica, no como una hermana religiosa. Nacida en Lima de Perú, Rosa se dedicó a la oración, a la penitencia y al servicio a los pobres. De niña llegó a conocer e imitar en sus prácticas ascéticas a Catalina de Siena. En nuestra parroquia de St. Aedan, culturalmente rica y diversa, es impresionante notar que Santa Rosa de Lima es la patrona de las Américas y de los pueblos indígenas de las Américas, Perú, India y Filipinas.
El Evangelio que se proclama este Domingo de la Madre nos invita a honrar a nuestras madres, vivas y fallecidas, y a mirar la vida de Santa Rosa de Lima. El llamado de Cristo en el Evangelio de hoy, (Juan 15, 9-17,) nos urge a amarnos unos a otros como él nos amó. Rosa cumplió este mandato durante su breve vida inspiradora, al igual que nuestras madres y tantas otras mujeres de fe que hemos llegado a conocer. Estas mujeres de fe son fuentes de ese amor que Jesús describe en el Evangelio de hoy, un amor que permanece en nuestro corazón aunque muera la mamá. De hecho, nuestras madres han dejado una huella innegable en nosotros. Cristo nos invita, animados por esa huella, a imitarlas y a hacer lo que hicieron ellas: AMAR.
En este Día de la Madre, y al recordar que Cristo nos llama a amar, me gusta hacer resaltar que nuestras madres, al igual que Rosa de Lima, fueron laicas llenas de fe. Se quedaron en el mundo y participaron en la vida familiar y en el servicio a la Iglesia. Este llamado a servir como laicas y laicos estimula ricamente la vida de la Iglesia, quizás ahora más que nunca. Al considerar los maravillosos ministerios de nuestra parroquia --- Educación Religiosa, el cuidado de los enfermos, los confinados, los migrantes, los indocumentados, los hambrientos, el ministerio litúrgico y la oración comunitaria --- me siento inspirado y humilde. En nuestra parroquia los ministerios destacan y la comunidad está viva gracias al amor y al servicio dedicado de hombres y mujeres laicos. Por sus muchos ministerios, la comunidad de St. Aedan y de la vecindad encuentra a ese Cristo que se proclama en el Evangelio, AMIGO.
Sigamos caminando en mayo con nuestra Madre María, Santa Rosa de Lima, Santa Catalina de Siena y nuestras madres, vivas y fallecidas. Pidamos a Cristo que nos llene de la valentía de las laicas, de su esperanza, generosidad y amor. Que inspiren en nosotros en este mes, y más allá de este mes, un amor y una santidad aún mayores en el nombre de Jesús.
