Vineyards appear in Scripture so often. In fact, they are in three of today’s four readings. Usually, as today’s psalm response says, a vineyard is “the house of Israel,’ which belongs to God.
Isaiah’s song of the vineyard seems to be a gloomy tale for Israel—a carefully cultivated vineyard bearing only wild grapes, and an owner who allows it to fall to ruin. While Isaiah doesn’t guarantee what God will do with his people, it’s pretty certain that if nothing changes and they continue in their sin, they will experience the effects of cutting themselves off from God.
But even in the midst of this grim story, there is hope. Don’t forget that the landowner tirelessly cultivates the vineyard. He doesn’t give up! Yes, God expects to see fruit from God’s people, but only because God knows that we can bear fruit. And yes, when we separate ourselves from God, we experience the consequences. But God constantly calls us back and offers us help. That’s cause for hope.
As I look back to early June and the gradual reopening of St. Aedan’s I see so many signs of God’s amazing care for us and so much fruit offered by so many at St. Aedan’s. With the generosity of our parish volunteers, we have been able to safely welcome parishioners to weekday and Sunday Masses. Together, we concluded last year’s Religious Education Program with a beautiful celebration of First Communion in July followed by an inspiration Confirmation Mass in August. With a team of old and new Catechists, and Joy and I as co-directors we are about to begin our online Religious Education Program for 75 of our parish young people. Just as extraordinary and hopeful in this Pandemic Moment is that we will have baptized by the end of this weekend 21 of our babies and celebrated 6 weddings.
God has been helping us as the St. Aedan’s faith family through the sacraments to feel nourished and restored. As brothers and sisters in the Lord, like the other vines in the vineyard, we support and encourage one another along the way. What a grace; what a blessing! Let us together recite the words of this prayer as we journey on mission into a new week:
“Heavenly Father, help me to respond to your relentless grace and to bear fruit for you!”
“Señor, Dios de los ejércitos, ¡restáuranos! ¡Que brille tu rostro y nos salve!”
(Salmo 80, 20)
De viñedos se habla mucho en las Escrituras. Y de hecho en las Lecturas de hoy las viñas se aparecen tres veces. Normalmente, como se ve en el salmo responsorial, el viñedo se refiere a “la casa de Israel”, una casa que le pertenece a Dios.
El cántico de la viña, que entona el profeta Isaías, alude a un relato nefasto en la historia de Israel: un relato sobre una viña bien cultivada que solamente da uvas agrias, a pesar de los esfuerzos del dueño que la deja caerse en ruinas. Aunque el profeta Isaías no predice con seguridad un castigo, parece cierto que, si el pueblo no se arrepienta y si continúa en un estado de pecado, experimentará lo que pasa cuando un pueblo se aleja de Dios.
Sin embargo, a pesar de este relato nefasto, hay esperanza. Es importante recordar que el propietario se esfuerza por cultivar la viña. No la abandona. El dueño cuenta con que la viña dé uvas, pero solamente porque el dueño (Dios) sabe con certeza que la viña (nosotros) es capaz de dar uvas. Al alejarnos de Dios sufrimos las consecuencias, pero a la vez Dios sigue llamándonos y nos ofrece ayuda. Por lo tanto hay esperanza.
Cuando recuerdo el mes de junio y nuestra iglesia cerrada; y cuando recuerdo una nueva apertura gradual; veo cuanto Dios se preocupa de nosotros, y cuanto los feligreses siguen dando buenos frutos. Por la generosidad de nuestros voluntarios ha sido posible darles a los feligreses una bienvenida segura a las misas dominicales y entresemana. Trabajando juntos pudimos terminar el programa de Educación Religiosa: en julio una celebración bonita de la Primera Comunión, y en agosto una celebración inspiradora de la Confirmación. Con la ayuda de un equipo de catequistas, tanto nuevos como veteranos, Joy Villanueva y yo, los co-directores del Programa, estamos por comenzar el Programa de Educación Religiosa en linea, por el que 75 muchachos y jóvenes de la parroquia recibirán la instrucción en nuestra fe católica. Además, a pesar de la pandemia que nos amenaza, ha sido posible bautizar a 21 niños y celebrar el matrimonio de 6 parejas.
Por los Sacramentos Dios va ayudándonos, la familia de fe de San Aedan, de tal modo que nos sentimos mejores, alimentados y renovados. Hermanos y hermanas en la familia del Señor, vides en la misa viña, nos animamos unos a otros. ¡Una gracia, una bendición indudable! Durante esta semana de misión, recemos la oración siguiente:
Padre celeste, ayúdame a responder a tu gracia incesante y a dar fruto para ti.
