During the month of October, we celebrate as a Church Respect Life Month. How we honor, protect and defend life issues are absolutely connected to the teaching of Jesus Christ and how we should live our lives as Catholic Christians, not only in working toward a culture of life but also how these issues need to be paramount in our lives as citizens of the United States.
Over the years, you have heard this teaching summarized by “Human life is precious from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death.” We probably have heard this phrase so many times that it seems to become cliché. But if we don’t understand this simple phrase in its entirety and what it is really saying, then we do not understand the fullness of Jesus’ teaching.
The teaching is this: Every human being is made in the image and likeness of God. We have a dignity that comes from God and is inherent in who we are as sons and daughters of God. That dignity cannot ever be taken away from us. We are precious in God’s eyes and as Christians we are called to see each and every human being as precious in our eyes as well. That is a big order but we are called to put on the eyes and heart of God and revel in the sanctity of every human life.
So what does this mean? It means that the child in the womb is a human being and is precious in God’s eyes and so must be precious in our eyes. It means that the baby born in poverty or born in wealth is precious in God’s eyes and so must be precious in our eyes as well. It means that the able-bodied person and the disabled person are precious in God’s eyes and so should be precious in our eyes as well. It means that the refugee and the immigrant and the ones who have been established in a place for many years is precious in God’s eyes and so should be precious in our eyes as well. In means that the sick person, the poor person, the oppressed person, the one who is discriminated against, the prisoner on death row is precious in God’s eyes and must be precious in our eyes as well. It means that the elderly, the dying, the lonely, the least among us and the greatest among us is precious in God’s eyes and so must be precious in our eyes as well.
Let us continue our journey through this RESPECT LIFE MONTH by offering this prayer as a Parish family:
“O God, help me to daily put on your eyes and heart so as to revel in the sanctity of every human life and to tirelessly work for justice and inclusion for all.”
En este mes de octubre, dedicada por la Iglesia a la protección de la vida, preguntamos: ¿Cómo podemos proteger y defender la vida en todas sus formas, conforme a las enseñanzas de Jesucristo? ¿Cómo podemos llevar una vida cristiana conforme a nuestra fe católica — de modo que se estimula una cultura “pro-vida” en el centro de nuestras vidas como ciudadanos de los EE.UU.?
En los años pasados se ha proclamado con frecuencia: “La vida humana es preciosa desde la concepción hasta la muerte natural.” Esta frase se repite tantas veces que puede llegar a ser un lugar común de poco interés. Sin embargo, si no prestamos atención a la sabiduría de la frase, no entenderemos la enseñanza de Jesús en toda su plenitud.
Ésta es la enseñanza: Todo ser humano lo hizo Dios en su imagen y semejanza. Gozamos de una dignidad que tiene su origen en Dios, porque somos los hijos e hijas de Dios. Esa dignidad la puede quitar nadie. Todos somos preciosos en los ojos de Dios. Dios mismo nos llama, a los Cristianos que somos, a reconocer que todo ser humano es precioso, no solamente en los ojos de Dios sino en nuestros ojos también. Aunque sea un reto muy difícil, Dios nos pide que — con los ojos y el corazón de Dios — deleitemos de la inviolabilidad de toda vida humana.
¿Qué significa?
Significa que una criatura en el vientre de su mamá ya es un ser humano, precioso en los ojos de Dios, que debe ser precioso en nuestros ojos también. Significa que un niño que nace en la pobreza, o que nace en la riqueza, es precioso en los ojos de Dios, y debe ser precioso en nuestros ojos también. Significa que tanto el sano como el minusválido son preciosos en los ojos de Dios, que deben ser preciosos en nuestros ojos también. Significa que un refugiado, un inmigrante y un residente de muchos años son preciosos en los ojos de Dios, y deben ser preciosos en nuestros ojos también. Significa que el enfermo, el necesitado, el marginado o el oprimido que sufre discrimiación, y el condenado a muerte son preciosos en los ojos de Dios, y deben ser preciosos en nuestros ojos también. Significa que el viejito, el moribundo, el aislado, los humildes y los pudientes son preciosos en los ojos de Dios, y deben ser preciosos en nuestros ojos también.
Sigamos caminando por este MES A FAVOR DE LA VIDA, y oremos:
“Oh Dios, ayúdame cada día a ver con tus ojos y sentir con tu corazón, para deleitarme de la inviolabilidad de cada ser humano, y para esforzarme y entregarme a la justicia y a la inclusión de todos.”
