This week in Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 14:22-33, we find Jesus wanting to go off alone to pray and the disciples remained in a boat on the water. Suddenly the winds picked up and the disciples found themselves being tossed all about and very afraid. In this terrifying moment Jesus suddenly emerged before them walking on the water toward the boat. This appearance of Jesus filled them with even greater fear. Jesus reassured them with these words, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” He then invited Peter to walk toward him on the water. He was able until he allowed his fears to yet again kick in and found himself sinking. As Jesus caught Peter before he drowned, he said, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
How often in this time of Pandemic have we felt like the disciples in a boat on stormy seas, afraid and uncertain? Have we also found ourselves in moments when Jesus was trying to break through those fears to calm us and provide healing but we returned to a place of inner fear and deep despair. Through all of this and still now as the Pandemic continues, Jesus so desires to say those words he spoke to Peter, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Jesus calls us in this horrible moment of Pandemic and every moment of our lives to believe and not doubt in his daily love and mercy for us.
This week I so powerful experienced Christ present, loving and inspiring me as we gathered our Confirmation candidates, parents and sponsors for three afternoons of Zoom preparation for the Sacrament. The courage and faith of our young people truly lifted me up and brought me to a place of greater hope and thanksgiving. Through them and in the midst of the Pandemic, I heard Christ saying to me, “Take courage . . . do not be afraid.”
In this spirit of celebrating the Christ so alive and flourishing at St. Aedan’s in this Pandemic moment, I invite you to consider being part of a ZOOM session we will hold in the coming days to learn more about how we can participate in a community action initiative with other houses of worship and nonprofit institutions in Jersey City that will take place on August 31. This community action moment is part of Jersey City Together’s “Action 2020” program and is focused on racial inequality and criminal justice in New Jersey. Indeed, this promises to be for St. Aedan’s a chance to proclaim to our neighbors how Christ fills us with a holy boldness and courage to witness to his healing power and merciful love for all.
Esta semana en el evangelio de Mateo, capítulo 14:22-22, Jesús desea orar a solas mientras los discípulos están en una barca en el agua. El viento aumenta de pronto y la barca de los discípulos comienza a ser sacudida por las olas dejándoles muertos de miedo. En este momento terrible, Jesús aparece repentinamente caminado sobre el agua y dirigiéndose a la barca. La apariencia de Jesús asusta aún más a los discípulos. Jesús les calma diciéndoles, “Tranquilícense y no teman. Soy yo.” Jesús invita a Pedro a caminar hacia él sobre el agua. Pedro es capaz de hacerlo hasta que se deja llevar por el miedo y comienza a hundirse. Jesús le tiende la mano para sostenerle y le dice, “Hombre de poca fe, ¿por qué dudaste?”
¿Cuántas veces durante esta pandemia nos hemos sentido como los discípulos en la barca sacudida por una tormenta, con miedo e inseguros? ¿Acaso hemos vivido también momentos en los que Jesús intenta calmarnos y sanar nuestras ansiedades, pero hemos reaccionado regresando a ese sitio interior lleno de miedo y desesperanza? Durante toda esta pandemia y aún ahora, Jesús desea profundamente decirnos aquellas palabras que le dirigió a Pedro, “Tranquilícense y no teman. Soy yo.” Durante este horrible tiempo de pandemia y en cada momento de nuestra vida, Jesús nos llama a creer en, y no dudar del, amor y de la misericordia que nos concede cada día.
Esta semana me sentí poderosamente inspirado por la presencia y el amor de Cristo en las tres tardes en las que los candidatos de la Confirmación junto con sus padres y padrinos se reunieron conmigo a través de Zoom. El valor y la fe de nuestros jóvenes me animaron muchísimo y me llenaron de mayor esperanza y gratitud. En medio de esta pandemia, oí a Cristo diciéndonos a través de ellos, “Tranquilícense y no teman.”
Animado por el espíritu que busca celebrar a Cristo vivo y radiante en St. Aedan’s en medio de la pandemia, les invito a que piensen en asistir a una reunión vía Zoom que tendremos en los próximos días para aprender cómo podemos participar de una iniciativa comunitaria que tendrá lugar el 31 de agosto. Otros lugares de culto y varias instituciones sin fines de lucro que están en Jersey City participarán también. Esta iniciativa es parte del programa “Action 2020” (“Acción 2020”) de la organización “Jersey City Together” y tiene como enfoque la desigualdad racial y el sistema de justicia penal en New Jersey. En efecto, esta iniciativa promete brindarle a St. Aedan’s la oportunidad de proclamarle a nuestros vecinos cómo Cristo nos llena de una sagrada audacia y valentía que nos anima a dar a todos testimonio del poder sanador y amor misericordioso de Jesús.
