This past Friday, June 11 we celebrated the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a devotion rooted in John’s Gospel, where blood and water flowed from Jesus’ side at his crucifixion. Gazing at the pierced heart of Christ, we marvel at his boundless love that led him to offer himself on the cross for us.
Although devotion to the wounded heart of Jesus existed as early as the twelfth century, it was in 1677 that a young Visitation nun, Margaret Mary Alacoque, experienced a vision of Jesus and his Sacred Heart. “I could plainly see his heart,” she wrote, “pierced and bleeding, yet there were flames, too, coming from it and a crown of thorns around it. He told me to behold his heart which so loved humanity. Then he seemed to take my very heart from me and place it there in his heart. In return he gave me back part of his flaming heart.”
At first, Margaret Mary’s vision was not believed by the other sisters in her convent. In fact, the Mother Superior invited a Jesuit priest to the convent to listen to Margaret’s extraordinary claims and declare her a lunatic or liar. The Jesuit’s name was Father Claude la Colombiere, S.J. and instead of listening to the other sisters, Father Claude listened deeply to Margaret Mary and declared her experience authentic and spiritually inspiring. Over time, both Margaret Mary and Father Claude would be declared saints of our Church.
From his deep listening to Margaret Mary and praying himself with the image of her vision, Fr. Claude composed a beautiful prayer that I believe can inspire our own journey these weeks and months ahead as we begin a new chapter of life and Church beyond the Pandemic:
O God, what will you do to conquer the fearful hardness of our hearts?
Lord, you must give us new hearts, tender hearts, sensitive hearts, to replace hearts that are made of marble and of bronze.
You must give us your own Heart, Jesus. Come, lovable Heart of Jesus.
Place your Heart deep in the center of our hearts and enkindle in each heart a flame of love as strong, as great, as the sum of all the reasons that I have for loving you, my God.
O holy Heart of Jesus, dwell hidden in my heart, so that I may live only in you and only for you, so that, in the end, I may live with you eternally in heaven. Amen.
El viernes pasado, 11 de junio, nos tocó celebrar con gozo la Fiesta del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, una devoción arraigada en el Evangelio de Juan, donde dice que sangre y agua brotaron de su corazón al ser crucificado. Contemplando el corazón traspasado de Cristo, nos maravillamos de su amor ilimitado que lo llevó a ofrecerse en la cruz por nosotros.
Aunque es seguro que la devoción al corazón herido de Jesús existía desde el siglo XII, fue en Francia en 1677 cuando una joven monja de la Visitación, Margarita María Alacoque, experimentó una visión de Jesús y de su Sagrado Corazón. Describió la experiencia así: “Pude ver claramente su corazón, perforado y sangrando. También llamas salían del corazón y de una corona de espinas que rodeaba el corazón. Jesús me dijo que contemplara el corazón que tanto amaba a la humanidad. Luego pareció que Jesús quitó mi propio corazón y lo colocó allí en su corazón. A cambio, me devolvió parte de su corazón llameante ".
Al principio, las otras hermanas de su convento no creyeron en las visiones de Margarita María. De hecho, la Madre Superiora invitó a un sacerdote jesuita a evaluar las extraordinarias afirmaciones de Margarita, y luego declararla loca o mentirosa. El jesuita se llamaba Claude de la Colombiere. Escuchó profundamente la narración de Margarita María, y declaró que su experiencia era auténtica y espiritualmente inspiradora. Con el tiempo, tanto Margarita María como el padre Claude fueron declarados santos de nuestra Iglesia católica.
Después de escucharle a Margarita María, y después de rezar ante la misma imagen del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, el padre Claude compuso una hermosa oración que a mi parecer puede inspirarnos en las próximas semanas y meses, ya que después de la reciente pandemia estamos por comenzar un nuevo capítulo de la vida nuestra y de la parroquia.
Oh Dios, ¿qué harás para vencer la terrible dureza de nuestro corazón?
Señor, debes darnos corazones nuevos, corazones tiernos, corazones sensibles,
para reemplazar corazones hechos de mármol y bronce. Debes darnos tu propio Corazón.
Ven, Corazón adorable de Jesús.
Pon tu Corazón en el centro de nuestros corazones
y enciende en cada corazón una llama de amor tan fuerte, tan grande,
como la suma de todas las razones que tengo para amarte, Dios mío. Oh Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, habita escondido en mi corazón,
para que yo viva solo en ti y solo para ti,
para que, al final, pueda vivir contigo eternamente en el cielo.
